The Route 36, Thompson Avenue (CR 36) intersection is located in Middletown Township in Monmouth County at Route 36 (M.P. 19.72). The intersection includes a traffic signal and two forward jug handles that facilitate movements between Route 36 and Thompson Avenue (CR 36).
The purpose of the project is to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety conditions at the intersection of Route 36 and Thompson Avenue. The need for this project arose when the Route 36 and Thompson Avenue intersection became ranked #58 on the NJDOT Safety Management Intersection Ranking List of State Highway Intersection crash locations by severity. The crash rate is 27% higher than the average crash rate for roadways with similar cross-sections. There are limited pedestrian accommodations at the intersection that do not align with the existing sidewalk network.
The crash rate is 27% higher than the average crash rate for roadways with similar cross-sections.
NJDOT has identified the need for safety improvements to the Route 36 and Thompson Avenue intersection. The existing signal equipment, pedestrian curb ramps and guiderail do not meet current design standards.
Full signal replacement is proposed for the Route 36 and Thompson Avenue intersection to improve pedestrian and vehicular safety. Additional improvements include median barrier crash cushions, ADA compliant pedestrian crossings with high visibility crosswalks, new sidewalk linking bus stops to the existing sidewalk network, and replacement of substandard guiderail. Additionally, the Route 36 northbound jughandle will be modified to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety at the Henry Hudson Bike Trail crossing on Thompson Avenue. The Route 36 southbound jughandle will be modified to separate left turning and right turning vehicles into their own lane.
Staged construction will be needed to maintain thru traffic, no detours are anticipated.
